I was staring angrily at him, giving the impression he had no right to ask me that question. But I knew I was right, he had every right to do so. He is my partner, even if we are not officially married. Yet, I had to put up that façade of strength and confidence. But it turned out a wrong move to make.
“Anita, are you listening to me or not, I won’t ask you again, who was that guy that has been calling your phone repeatedly since I got here?
I gazed at him for a moment and then looked away from him, still fuming anger.
“I am waiting for your response, Anita, do not push me to lose my cool with you, who was that guy?”
I froze inside but managed to conceal my fear. MD’s voice was hard and fearful. I had never heard him speak in that tone before.
“He is a friend and nothing more!” I quickly answered, scared I might anger him the more if I pushed my response any further.
“I know he’s a friend but I want to know exactly what kind of friend he is to you,” he quizzed me further with the most terrifying look.
“I just told you he’s a friend and nothing more,” I shot back. Sounding very defensive now.
MD looked at me menacingly, silently, and then stretched out his right hand. “Give me that phone right now!” he demanded.
I was shocked. I was confused. Why would he be asking for my phone? What does he want to check in my phone? I wondered.
“Anita!” his deep, loud voice jolted me back. “Let me have that phone!” he barked t me.
I held the phone tightly in my hand. “But why do you want my phone, MD?” I asked him, keeping the phone away from him.
“You will soon find out!” he fired back, stretching his hand to reach for the phone. I quickly held it away from his reach.
“But you need to tell me what……” I did not finish that statement before I felt a blinding slap across my face. I didn’t know when the phone dropped from my hand. I lost my balance and fell back on the couch behind me. For a moment, I couldn’t see anything, everywhere was a blur.
Then, slowly, MD picked the phone from the floor and started looking through my messages!
