He didn’t like that one bit. It was like hitting him hard below the belt. Then suddenly, the phone started to ring again. Prince was calling again, the man was bent on making this date happen!
MD’s eyes sparkled with suppressed anger. “Anita, pick that call right now, I want to hear your conversation with the guy calling you relentlessly.”
At first, I hesitated and wanted to decline, but seeing the rage in his eyes, I decided against the idea. I would have to find a way for me to have a harmless looking conversation with Prince, one that will not anger MD any more than he already was.
“Hello,” I said slowly into the mouth piece as I picked the call.
“Hello, babe, what’s going on now? I’ve been calling you like forever but you’re not picking up!” Prince’s deep voice boomed into my ears.
“I’m sorry, Prince, I will have to speak with you later, I have my hands full at the moment,” I tried to explain to him, finding the right words to convey my message as best as I could.
“You have your hands full? But how? Are we not seeing each other later today again?” he asked.
I was watching MD closely. He was listening to me with rapt attention, trying to make sense of the conversation as he couldn’t hear the voice on the other line. “No, it won’t be possible, but I will talk to you later,” I told him.
I could feel his disappointment but there was nothing I could do at that point. He just said, “Okay,” and he ended the call.
“So, Anita, this is what you do anytime I am not here, right?” MD snarled as I dropped the phone. I didn’t respond. He continued. “For the last time, Anita, who was that guy that just called you?”
I was staring angrily at him, giving the impression he had no right to ask me that question. But I knew I was right, he had every right to do so. He is my partner, even if we are not officially married. Yet, I had to put up that façade of strength and confidence. But it turned out a wrong move to make.
“Anita, are you listening to me or not, I won’t ask you again, who was that guy that has been calling your phone repeatedly since I got here?
I gazed at him for a moment and then looked away from him, still forming anger.
