Aunty Meg’s eyes almost popped out of their sockets in shock. Her mouth hung open in total disbelief. She didn’t see that one coming.
“Whaaat?” she exclaimed. “What did you just say, Anita?” she asked, shock written all over her face.
“You heard me right, Aunty Meg, I no longer give a damn about MD!” I repeated, emphasising every word I uttered.
“Excuse me?” she retorted, barely believing her ears. “For God’s sake, Anita, what has come over you? What exactly is going on here?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Aunty Meg, all I know is that I am now willing to take my own destiny into my own hands,” I answered confidently.
“And you think the right way to do that is by cheating on your husband and…..”
“He is not my husband!” I cut in, stopping her before she was done talking. “That’s the point you keep missing, Aunty Meg, MD is not my husband, he has refused to get married to me and be my husband in the legal way!” I shot back at her.
She sighed. “So, then, what is he to you?”
“He is the father of my child, no more, no less!” I returned angrily. ”And just in case you don’t know, being my husband and being the father of my child are two different things and he has chosen to remain only as the father of my child!”
Aunty Meg didn’t know what to say again, she just got tired of my drama. If I wasn’t someone she genuinely cared about, I am sure she would since have given up on me and leave me to do as I wished.
“Listen, Anita, I know this is your life and you’re an adult, a mother for that matter, so I can’t really begin to tell you how to live your life now,” she’d begun. “But I need you to understand that life is not always what it seems like from a distance. You may think right now that dating this Prince James is the right thing for you to do at this time but I can tell you, as an older woman, that you’re taking a disastrous step based on your emotional state at this very moment. You feel hurt by MD’s reluctance to get properly married to you, you feel hurt by what happened between you and his wife at his house when you visited, that’s why you’re taking this irrational decision. Your action is not based on logic but based on emotions. To you, it’s like getting back at MD, it’s like having your revenge but trust me, it’s not worth it at all, and if you’re not careful, this whole thing may boomerang back on your face!”
