I am the last child in the family of seven children. My parents were quite comfortable when we were growing up. My father was an accountant with a federal government establishment while my mother was a vice principal in the secondary in Jos, where we lived. Being a last born has its advantages and disadvantages, for me I was pampered to death. My parents rarely denied me anything, neither did my elder siblings deny me anything. I got everything I needed and more. I was the envy of my friends.
As we grew, my own elder sisters got married and went to live in America with their husbands. I was privileged to visit them during school holidays, of course, I made sure I took pictures of my trips and came back to school with lots of gifts for my friends. Before long, my popularity became too noticeable in Unijos where I was studying biochemistry. My only redeeming feature was that I lived off campus with my parents otherwise I wonder how I would have been able to cope with the high number of people who wanted to be my friends all of a sudden.
One of the disadvantages of being the last child was that I had to live with my parents, they couldn’t bear for me to be away from them and most times we had to fight seriously before they would permit me to go abroad for holidays. Much as I hated it, but I am thankful because I only managed not to be influenced by cultists because I lived with my parents. The few that even tried to approach me got discouraged when they saw how closely monitored my parents were of me. The only thing I didn’t do back in Unijos was cultism, but I was a real playboy I couldn’t have done otherwise because she number of ladies who threw themselves at me were too much and the irresistible
They flocked around me in droves. I was confused at what to do with them. Most times, I would beg my friends to take some of the girls and help me out with them, as there was no way I could cope with all of them. My friends Jude and Emeka were often too happy to help me out where the girls were concerned.
“Hilary, what is happening this weekend?” Emeka would often ask me.
“I don’t know, but am sure something would come up,” I would reply.
“Please whatever comes up, let us know on time so I can discharge Ify for the weekend,” Jude would say and snack his lips. I often wondered why he enjoyed cheating on Ify, she was one of the prettiest girls in campus and was quite intelligent. But whenever I brought up the issue he would hush me up, saying that I was in to position to caution him. Emeka would laugh at us as we argued, we usually ended up at a bar and spend hours drinking. My phone rang just then and I picked it.
“Hello Amina, how are you?” I said happily into the mouthpiece. Amina was the daughter of a one-time commissioner in Plateau State, though she lived in the US, but she always hooked up with me whenever she visited Nigeria.
“I am very fine. Hillary what is happening around you?”
“Nothing much dear,” I responded.
“In that case, I’m inviting you to my elder brother’s engagement party tomorrow,” she went further to give me the details of the venue. My friends and I were exhilarated, we prepared in earnest and went to the party. As we expected it was the bomb, there were lots of girls, drinks and music. Amina introduced us to her flocks of beautiful damsels who were also from affluent homes, that party remains one of the best parties I have attended in my life. No one could control my greed or me. I sought for and got whatever I wanted, I had started to believe I was God’s answer to every woman and that no woman could resist me. Until I met Chelsea, she was the sexiest girl I had ever seen. She was simply gorgeous with a winning smile. Chelsea was born and raised in London, but her parents went her to Nigeria to attend higher institution and get to know her culture. She was not only sexy, but also sophisticated and intelligent. I fell helplessly in love with Chelsea and tried as much as possible to win her heart, but she didn’t pay the least interest to me. Other big boys in school were seeking her as well. I sent Emeka to try to woo Chelsea for me, I had never felt that desperate about a girl. I was going crazy and Chelsea was my cure. Instead of Chelsea to warm up to she fell in love with Emeka.
“Emeka, how could you betray me in this way?” I asked bitterly when I found out they had started dating.
“Hilary calm down, I can assure you that I didn’t ask Chelsea to fall in love with me,” he shrugged. “I went to beg her on your behalf and she fell for me, besides I have come to love her as well and them is nothing I can do.”
“Of course there is something you can do. You can leave her for me. Chelsea was supposed to be mine, and not yours,” I almost screamed.
“Guys, guys, calm down and stop making a scene because of a girl?” Jude said, stepping in between us as Emeka and I were about throwing fist cuffs. “Chelsea is not worth fighting for?”
“Okay, but I am sure you wouldn’t want to tell him to the full glare of people,” Jude said and they both burst out laughing. I was so disgusted that I walked away from them, that incident marked the end of our friendship.
