The Oyo State Government has insisted it will proceed with the planned installation and coronation of Alhaji Ganiyu Busari as the Oloja of Ago-Oja, despite a pending motion before the Supreme Court seeking to halt the process.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, disclosed this on Thursday, maintaining that the government acted within the confines of the law.

“The Oyo State Obas and Chiefs Law has been entrenched, and it is the responsibility of a responsible government not to trample on those laws because it would be sacrilegious, but to enhance and improve them in all ways so that our cultural and traditional values will be sustained, no matter the level or vociferous voices of antagonists,” Oyelade said.
He added that the state government carried out due diligence before approving the installation.
“The state government is mindful that the opposing voices are in the hyper minorities.
We went through due diligence to ensure that cognisance was given to the underpinning tenets of our culture and tradition in this regard.
“Nothing will stop the state government from performing its constitutional and lawful roles in all facets of governance, including issues covering the Oyo State Obas and Chiefs matters,” he said.
The development follows a motion on notice dated January 30, 2026, filed at the Supreme Court in Appeal No. SC/404/2018, seeking to restrain the Oyo State Government from creating, recognising, or elevating the chieftaincy stool of Baale of Ago-Oja pending the determination of an appeal before the apex court.
The motion was instituted by the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, against the Governor of Oyo State and the Attorney-General of Oyo State, pursuant to Order 2 Rule 28(1) of the Supreme Court Rules, 2014 (as amended), and Section 6(6)(b) of the 1999 Constitution.

Counsel for the Alaafin, Adedola Omotunde (SAN) & Co., had in a letter dated February 8, 2026, warned Governor Seyi Makinde that proceeding with the coronation scheduled for February 13, 2026, at Olivet High School, Oyo, would amount to illegality and contempt of court.
