A passionate appeal has gone to electricity users in Ogun Business district by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to pay up their electricity bills, recharge their prepaid electricity meter with the right channels, and stop electricity theft.
The appeal was made earlier today in Abeokuta the state capital at a town hall meeting by Mrs Busolami Tunwashe, Lead Media Relations of IBEDC. She said that the town hall meeting was called to interact with IBEDC costumers and appealed to them for their cooperation so as to serve them better. Mrs Tunwashe explained that,” the purpose of this engagement is to interact with customers and make certain issues clear to them. We like to make an appeal on the issue of Debt owing the company. In Ogun state alone, customers are owing us over 67Billion Naira. We are asking them to please pay up, no business can survive with such huge debt.”
She complained bitterly how customers engaged in electricity theft to short change the company.
Mrs Tunwashe added that,” some customers either don’t pay for light they use, or tamper with their meters; some don’t even have metres at all and connect directly to Electricity. Some time they carry these act in the night and it is causing us alot of losses; and that is why we are appealing to our customers today to please desist from the act of energy theft and get metered. If they get metered , the issue of crazy bill will be a thing of the past.
IBEDC also used the occasion to appeal to their customers not to use third party to buy meter. The company explained that customers who failed to buy meter through the recommended channels, but through a third party or an agent, such fund will go to a private pocket.
The company used the occasion of the meeting to also appeal to electricity consumers to stop assaulting their staff, but report any indiscipline or sharp practice, as management will take appropriate disciplinary measures against such.
Mrs Tunwashe also appealed to the people to stop vandalizing the company’s property, as this definitely affect power distribution. She said that vandalism is a criminal offense that is punishable under the law.
