The Police have declared one Alhaji
Usman Adamu wanted, following the
death of one Miss Joy Odama, a 200-
Level Mass Communications
undergraduate of Cross River State
University, said to have died in Abuja.
Alhaji Adamu, a millionaire
businessman, was said to be notorious
for sleeping with young girls allegedly
for money making ritual. Most of his
victims are female undergraduates, we
gathered.
Aside declaring Alhaji Adamu wanted,
this magazine gathered that the
Divisional Police Officer in charge of Karmo, where the alleged murder took
place (names withheld), has been
queried, removed and transferred over
what was described as “professional
misconduct” over Joy’s death.
According to investigation, three girls,
who visited the Alhaji’s house were
taken to hospital, with two of them
unconscious and one dead. An autopsy
has been carried out on the dead victim
(Joy), but there is no result yet. Police
said that the said Alhaji Adamu was on
the run, but they are looking for him.
A petition detailing the atrocities of Alhaji
Adamu had been sent to the police by
one Mrs Philomena Odama, the mother
of Joy, one of the unfortunate victims of
the Hausa man who reportedly died
under him during sexual intercourse. In
the petition called ‘Call for Justice for the
Murder of my Daughter, Joy Odama by Alhaji Usman Adamu’, Mrs. Odama had
said:
“On December 18, 2016, one Elizabeth
from Ogoja Local Government in Cross
River State, who is my daughter’s friend,
visited us and told Joy to accompany
her to see one Alhaji Usman Adamu,
who she said was a philanthropist. “She
said the Alhaji lives in the same
neighbourhood, precisely at Ibro
Quarters, old Karmo, Abuja. Knowing
Elizabeth as a longtime friend and
without any suspicion, she innocently
followed her to the said Alhaji’s house.
On getting there, my daughter called me
that the Alhaji wants to see me.

“I asked why and she said Alhaji wants to help with her education and that of other girls who live in the neighbourhood and are
with their parents. “I quickly went to the
house and Alhaji Usman promised to help in my daughter’s education and
equally promised to get me a job with
the NSCDC. We exchanged numbers
and I left. “Two days later, on December
20, 2016, Alhaji Usman called my
daughter and said his house help was
sick and that she should come and look
after her, while he goes to get a doctor.
“He also said he has called other girls to
assist. Joy told me and I allowed her to
go. That was the last time I saw my
daughter alive. “The next morning, I
called Joy and Alhaji Adamu’s phones
several times without response.

Eventually, when Alhaji Adamu picked
his call, to my surprise, he pretended
not to know who I was. “When I pressed
further, he asked me ‘Did anything
happen to Joy?’ At this point, I knew all
was not well. Karmo DPO ‘intervenes’
“My relatives and I decided to go to the Police. As we were about stepping out
of the house, we saw two policemen in
our house and they asked us to follow
them to Karmo Police Station. “On
getting there, the DPO informed us that
the girls that went to Alhaji’s house were
all unconscious; that one is not
responding to treatment, while others
are responding.

“We requested to see
Joy, but were turned down and asked to
come the next day. We pressed further,
but the DPO insisted we go home. “The
next day, being December 22, I went
back to the Police Station in the
company of relatives and a lawyer. To
my utter shock, I was told my daughter
was dead and had been taken to a
mortuary. “We asked to know how, why
and what led to Joy’s death and the
DPO declined comments. “Our lawyer
asked if the Alhaji has been arrested, but the DPO bluntly told us that as far as
he is concerned, Alhaji is not culpable,
no crime has been committed, that my
daughter died of natural causes and he
cannot arrest Alhaji Adamu.”
Victoria Ezekiel, a 19 years old female
cook at Alhaji Adamu’s house, also
shared her knowledge of the culprit’s
action. Her words;
“I was selling corn at Nizamiye Turkish
hospital, Jabi, Abuja and Alhaji Adamu
used to buy from me. He informed me
that he needs a cook and asked if I
could prepare tuwo, rice and other local
foods and I said I could. So, he took me
to his house on Friday October 7, 2016
and he asked me to resume duty on
Saturday. When I went to his house in
Karmo, I saw Martha and Nurse Gift.
There was one other girl; a house help
named Gift. I started working in the house and he agreed to pay me N15,000 monthly.
On December 20, when I was in the
kitchen, I felt dizzy and I fell down. I later
called Alhaji on the phone that I wasn’t
feeling well and wanted to go home. He
offered to take me to the hospital. I
waited for him till 8pm but he didn’t
show up. I normally close by 7pm. He
took me to the Federal Staff Hospital,
Jabi. The doctor examined me and said
I had malaria. I was given a form which
Joy (Odama) helped me to fill. When we
returned home, Alhaji said it was late
and that I should sleep over. Joy, Nurse
Gift, a girl we call ‘small Gift’ and I went
to bed. In the midnight, I wanted to
urinate and I saw Joy lying down beside
me. In the morning, I couldn’t stand up. I
could only hear noise in the apartment.

They rushed me to the hospital, gave
me drip and I felt better. It was later I
heard that Joy died and I was asking
what happened to her. The doctor was
also surprised. He asked me if it was the
girl that filled my form the night before.
We were waiting for Alhaji to come and
settle the bill but he didn’t show up till
6pm.
Alhaji later came to take me home and I
also called my sister to come to his
place to pick me. Because my legs were
swollen, I couldn’t walk, so she came
with a cab and took me home. It was
sometime in January, 2017 when Alhaji
called me on the phone and said they
had buried Joy and that he gave her
mother N200,000. He was telling me
stupid things before he inquired about
my health. He later told me that I would
need to make a statement. I went to his house and we went to Karmo Police
Station and a policeman said that I
should mention Alhaji’s neighbour who
lived upstairs as the person that locked
the generator door. I told him I didn’t
know the person, and besides, I was
sick then and why should I lie against
the man? Alhaji hit me on the back and
called me a fool in Hausa.
When I got home, I informed my mother
about what they asked me to say at the
police station. He said he had settled
Joy’s case and that he gave the mother
N200, 000 and the DPO N1m to cover
up the case.

Nigeria’s police chief, Ibrahim Idris

First, I was the only one and later, I
heard that Joy died. When we got to the
hospital, Alhaji was saying it was
generator fume that made me sick but
the doctor said there was nothing like
that. He said I had malaria.”

Asked how many girls were in Alhaji’s
house when she fell sick, Victoria said
many girls used to come to Alhaji’s
house. “They were Nurse Gift and small
Gift, Martha and Joy. Many girls used to
come there for sex with him. He would
give them money after sleeping with
them. They would enter his bedroom
and lock the door.”
