The Facebook management has said the account of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu was suspended for repeatedly violating the platform’s rules against hate speech.

A section of Nigerians had criticized Facebook over the unexplained embargo placed on the account of Nnamdi Kanu.

However, the social media networking giant has clarified its action.

Facebook revealed that Nnamdi Kanu had consistently infringed on its community rules. The statement noted that Facebook is a platform to give people voice and to feel safe; adding that it was not a platform for inciting violence, which it says Nnamdi Kanu had been notorious for.

“We believe in giving people a voice, but we also want everyone using Facebook to feel safe. It’s why we have Community Standards, which set out what is and isn’t allowed on Facebook…We remove anything that violates them,” the statement reads.

“In line with our rules, we removed Nnamdi Kanu’s page for repeatedly posting content that breaks those Community Standards; including content that violated our rules on coordinating harm and hate speech.”
