It was all gloom and woes for residents of Obalende when a fuel tanker crashed into Oando filling station and emptied its content on the street leading to a massive fire outbreak that ravaged a building next to it.

Not long after, the Lagos State fire service arrived the scene, but not much could be done as they tried in vain and could not put the fire out due to lack of water and effective equipments.

The fire got out of control and was spreading to other buildings until United Bank for Africa’s Fire service arrived. Evidently better equipped, they swung into action to the delight of all gathered and put out the fire in no time.

Eyewitnesses at the scene were full of praise for the bank who they said helped avert yet another disaster.

According to one Seun Olofin who was part of some residents at the scene trying desperately to help Lagos State Fire Service put out the light before the arrival of UBA said “the feat carried out by the bank in extinguishing the fire is indeed a grand one and must be commended”

One Chidinma Edith said, “Tony Elumelu is doing a great job. Kudos to them.”

Another eyewitnesses, Akin Abayomi noted that the pain and catastrophe that would have befallen the residents of Obalende today is not one to be imagined.

“Too many disasters happening around the world . COVID 19 has literally brought the world to its knees including Nigeria. We do not need another Disaster in any form. Recently fire outbreaks have been on the rise across the country without it being effectively contained leaving people with a lot of loss in property and valuables but today, UBA proved to us all that they are not only dependable but that they truly care.

“They did this not because they are under any obligation to do it but because they are a responsible bank that prioritises the lives and property of people. This is special indeed. you can feel the pulse of people gathered here, they are full of appreciation to UBA for saving their lives and property at a time when their government fell short.

“UBA has shown in many ways that they are a people’s bank that truly cares for Nigerians, as is evidenced in the recent N5bn support to government in the fight against COVID 19. On behalf of all gathered here I say thank you UBA and Tony Elumelu for saving us” he said.
