Unknown gunmen on Saturday night killed two Nigerian soldiers stationed to maintain the peace in Abonemma,  Akuku-Toru local government area of Rivers State.

During the last general election, voting could not hold in Abonemma and the entire local government area following the outbreak of violence which led to the death of several persons. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as a result, called off the election.

It was gathered late Saturday night that the killings occurred at the Obonoma- Abonemma junction. The identities of the soldiers had yet to be made known. The latest killings bring to three the number of soldiers killed so far by gunmen in Abonemma in the last one week,  the first, a Lieutenant,  having been killed on the eve of the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

A source in Abonema Saturday night, said the gunmen were suspected to have come from outside for the dastardly act after which they  vanished into thin air.

There were reports of gun fire raging in the area Saturday night.

The Spokesman for 6 Division Nigeria Army, Port Harcourt, Col. Ilyasu,  could not be reached for reaction to the development.
