The Fleet Commander of the Western Command of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Teikumo Ikoli, is dead.
He was found dead on Wednesday in his Lagos home.
However, there is confusion as to the cause of death.
The Navy said in a statement on Wednesday that it has invited the police to investigate the cause of Ikoli’s death.
The spokesperson for the Western Naval Command, Lieutenant Commander Chinwe Umar, said in a statement that the cause of Ikoli’s death had not been known, but investigation was going on.
The statement said: “In the early hours of Wednesday April 5, 2017, gunshots were heard in the vicinity where Rear Admiral Teikumo Daniel Ikoli resides in Apapa, Lagos.
“When his room was opened, he was found dead.”
However, sources said there is suspicion that armed bandits may have killed the Naval top shot or he committed suicide.
A gun was reportedly found on his chest when his body was discovered.
It was also learnt that there was a sign of a gun shot having been fired into his mouth.
Ikoli was Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT and later appointed into the Presidential Committee on probe of arms deal before he became Fleet Commander, Western Naval Command.
