People are still reacting angrily to Governor Nyesom Wike’s declration of N10m each to all the artistes that performed at Grammy Awards winner, Burna Boy’s home coming concert last weekend even as some see nothing wrong in that to celebrate the young man that brought honour and pride to fatherland.
According to the complainants, the Rivers State governor ‘’went into excess’’ again with the tax payers’ money to reward artistes who were originally contracted and paid to perform.’’
‘’We did not see anything spectacular in their gigs to necessitate such a stupendous gift from the state’s lean and over-stressed purse,’’ some of them argued.
They further stated that Burna Boy, their son from Abiama in Ahoada LGA who did them proud internationally, was the center of attraction and deserved all the accolades bestowed on him as we as the reward.
Governor Wike had offered him a landed property and money to develop it at the GRA, Port Harcourt plus the second highest honour of ‘’Distinguished Service Staff’’. He urged the Grammy winner and man of the moment, Burna Boy and every son and daughter of the state to work vigorously hard in their chosen areas of specialization as every success would be recognized and duly rewarded.
Meanwhile, a call has gone to those who see the star boy’s historic triumph at the Grammys as a determinant factor of superiority over others, to desist from that and have a rethink.
Foremost music critic and promoter, Mazi Hycinth Uguru while frowning at such ugly insinuations in some quarters stated that winners of the coveted award shindig do not emerge because they are the best.
Mazi Uguru who has been more of a behind -the-scene operator for over three decades now, said it was wrong for anybody to ascribe whatever form of wizardry or superiority over the others under any triumph or cirmstance.
‘’It sounds funny to hear such jibes that Burna Boy, for instance, is better than Davido;  Wizkid is better than Timaya and stuffs like that. It’s even childish because Nigeria has produced so many superstars that ought to have won the Grammy Awards all these years. Maybe this is Africa’s time and we should be happy that it came to Nigeria first.’’
‘’Neither Burna Boy nor Wizkid has done more than the likes of Fela, Sunny Ade, Oliver de Coque and the other musical greats we’ve had and still have in the country. Simply put, I think it’s a thing of joy that the elusive awards finally reached us through Burna Boy and Wizkid to which we must say congratulations,’’ Mazi Uguru concluded.
