In a significant move aimed at rejuvenating the police force, the Police Service Commission (PSC) convened an extraordinary meeting today, where it approved the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have either exceeded 35 years of service or are above the age of 60.

This pivotal decision follows a thorough review of previous resolutions made during the 24th Plenary Meeting held on September 27 and 28, 2017. At that time, the PSC had stipulated that the date of appointment for force entrants would be aligned with their enlistment date. However, the Commission has now recognized that this approach contradicted the established principle of service merger in the public sector and violated Public Service Rule No. 020908 (i & ii), which mandates retirement upon reaching either 35 years of service or the age of 60.

The announcement, made via a press release signed by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, confirmed that the Commission has revisited its earlier decision in light of these inconsistencies.

Chairing the extraordinary meeting was DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), mni, who was accompanied by Justice Adamu Paul Galumje, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court and Honorable Commissioner representing the Judiciary; DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), fdc, representing the Police; and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.

The Commission’s resolution has been promptly conveyed to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation, marking a decisive step towards enhancing the operational effectiveness of the police force.

As the PSC moves forward with this initiative, it reaffirms its commitment to upholding the standards and regulations that govern public service, ensuring a more dynamic and responsive police organization.
