Otedola Tanker Bridge Explosion Destroys Multimillion Naira Properties

Properties worth millions were on Saturday morning destroyed at Otedola Bridge area when two tankers carrying 33000 litres of petroleum products overturned and spilled fuel content in the middle of the road before bursting into flames.

The incident occurred around 2am at Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

However, no life was lost but many sustained injuries.

Those who were injured were said to be among hoodlums who tried to scoop fuel from drainage.

The hoodlums were said to have stormed the area with trucks loaded with plastic Jerry cans.

It was learnt that the hoodlums filled up many jerricans and carted them away in wheelbarrows.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the accident involving two tanker laden with petrol occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2020, at about 2.30am.

He said the incident also affected a container at Otedola end of the Lagos/Ibadan expressway.

“The commissioner of police Lagos state visited the scene for on the spot assessment and evacuation for ease flow of traffic. He was assited by the operatives of the Road Safety Corps, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA),  National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency ( LASEMA), and the state Fire service. They have been working assiduously on the evacuation since 2.30am” he added.

He said preliminary findings, revealed that the accident was caused by a container driver who lost control and rammed into a tanker laden with PMS, and caught fire.

“No life was lost. All efforts are on to ease traffic along the expressway,” he said.
