In tune with the common saying that ‘Oye ti o kan ara Iwo nbo wa kan ara Ede’   following the robbery incident recorded in the neighbouring state of Kwara , Osun State government has assured the people of the state of adequate security of  lives and property and also submitted that there is no cause for alarm.  Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon. Adelani Baderinwa said the government has sustained the efforts aimed at providing maximum security and ensuring peace and harmony in the state.  Baderinwa attributed the peaceful atmosphere existing in the state to factors that include the resolve of Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s to be proactive, his security consciousness and the social justice rendered by his administration.

Baderinwa stated this while answering  questions from journalists in respect of  the recent security breach of multiple bank robberies in Offa, Kwara State which led to several deaths and  the loss of large amounts of currencies. The commissioner maintained that the essence of governance is to ensure peace, harmony and security of life and property of the people, stating that Aregbesola had taken the bull by the horn in ensuring that every citizen of the state is protected and that people can retire to bed in peace.  Osun has according to Baderinwa got rated as one of the five most peaceful states in the country because Aregbesola’s administration has put in place adequate security measures that ordinarily make it difficult for crime to thrive. ‘Aregbesola was perhaps the most prepared person for the governorship position. He had his practical manifestoes for the smooth running of government. One of the Six Integral Action Plan of Aregbesola’s government is Communal Peace and Progress.

Essence of government is to ensure peace and harmony and social justice in the land, and that is what Aregbesola has offered the people of the state, he had been proactive when it involves the security of lives and property in the state. And that is why we are enjoying peace in Osun State. He procured and distributed 125 security patrol vehicles and 25 Armoured Personnel Carriers to the security agencies in the state for the purpose of enhancing security’, he said. Baderinwa, however,  commiserated with the Kwara State government, the Olofa of Offa, Oba Muftau Gbadamosi and the Nigeria Police Force on the robbery incident that reportedly claimed 30 lives. Provision of security in every society, according to the commissioner, begins with ensuring protection of lives and property and putting in place social justice and equity that ensures youth’s engagement. These two aspects of governance are strategic when it involves controlling crimes in the society, and I am happy that the people of Osun State know that Aregbesola has ensured social justice and got the youths  engaged positively. ‘The Nigeria Peace Index in the report released last Friday rated Osun as the most peaceful state in Nigeria based on the level of poverty, crime rate, level of education, rate of human rights abuse and the level of incarceration. We cannot deny the fact that Osun is among the top five states with least poverty rate, our education system is second to none in Nigeria and there is almost lack of abuse of human rights in the state. Apart from that, the Aregbesola’s administration procured and distributed 125 security patrol vehicles and 25 modern Armoured Personnel Carriers to the security agencies in the state in 2012.

This has enhanced security of lives and property in the state’ he stated. Baderinwa,  however, urged the people of the state to work on community policing, noting that security is a collective responsibility and that it requires the co-operation of all the stakeholders. He appealed to the people to be vigilant and monitor happenings in their environments.
