Nigerian media has failed to set agenda for the government and failed to help in focusing public attention on key public issues.
Chairman, Senate Committee on Diaspora, NGOs and CSOs, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru who stated this in Ilorin penultimate week as Guest Lecturer at the Lecture/Awards event organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel, Kwara State NUJ spoke on the topic ‘Democracy and The Rule of Law’.
He discouraged the idea of journalists restricting themselves to just getting the public informed about news and events.
‘Agreed that the media helps to disseminate information and educate the citizens on national issues, constitutional rights, among others, the Nigeria media has become stereotype to just reporting news and events. Media has a very big role to play in a sustaining democracy and the rule of law by providing broad range of information and communication to stimulate citizens on developmental issues.
This can only happen when the Nigerian media decide to go beyond mere reporting of news and events in the country , adopt the developmental and investigative approach to journalism, and set agenda for governance’, he submitted.
