MTN Nigeria, one of the country’s biggest telecoms operator, has warned of a potential disruption in service due to rising insecurity.
The development comes against the backdrop of a worrisome wave of insecurity in Nigeria.
MTN had intimated its customers of the situation in a message seen by Reuters. Equally important, the development has seen MTN become the first company in Nigeria to acknowledge a possible disruption to its services due to the disturbing level of insecurity in the country.
“Sadly, we must inform you that with the rising insecurity in different parts of Nigeria; service delivery to your organization may be impacted in the coming days.
“This means that in some cases, our technical support team may not be able to get to your site and achieve optimum turnaround time in fault management as quickly as possible,’’ MTN had purportedly written to customers.
The development is bound to come as a source of concern to millions of Nigerians who number among MTN’s customers. The telco, a leading provider of telephony and data services, occupies a major share of the market.
Specifically, Reuters reports that MTN runs Nigeria’s largest mobile phone network which generates around a third of the company’s revenue. Also, Nigeria is MTN’s most lucrative market out of the 22 countries the company operates in across Africa; Asia and the Middle East.
Nigeria is currently battling against a rising tide of insecurity.
Recently, there has been a surge of kidnapping for ransom; as well as mass abductions of students and children, especially in the North. Furthermore, the country is struggling to rein in armed conflict between herdsmen and pastoralist farmers.
Worse still, it is prosecuting an insurgency by armed jihadist groups such as Boko Haram; as well as the Islamist State in West Africa (ISWAP) which has spanned over a decade.
