This is not the best of times for the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Alhaji Modibbo Kawu.
He has been suspended indefinitely.
The anti-graft body, the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, had months ago begun his prosecution for alleged corruption.
President Muhammadu Buhari we learned has asked the most senior Director at the Commission to take over from Kawu.
The ICPC had earlier urged the federal government to suspend Kawu and 32 others involved in ongoing criminal case bordering on corruption.
Kawu is facing trial for allegedly using his position to enjoy corruption advantages.
The Commission had in May last year arraigned Kawu and two others; Dipo Onifade and Lucky Omoluwa, over alleged N2.5 billion fraud.
They are facing a 12-count charge. They allegedly conspired to use Kawu’s position to ease things for Mr. Omoluwa, his friend and associate.
The three of them however made not guilty plea and were granted bail.
The anti-graft agency also accused Kawu of allegedly luring the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed into signing the deal.
Kawu allegedly asked him to approve payment of N2.5 billion to Pinnacle Communications Ltd owned by Mr Omoluwa as ‘Seed Grant’ under the Digital Switch-Over Programme of the federal government.
Moddibo Kawu and Lai Muhammed have not been on speaking terms for months now.
