Premier Nigerian gospel award, MEGA, hosted the Nigerian entertainment industry to the eighth edition of its award show on Sunday, November 29, 2020. The star-studded ceremony held online, and was well attended by gospel and non-gospel entertainers across the industry. This year’s theme was aptly titled, ‘Taking Gospel Music Into The Clouds’.
The two-and-a-half hour event was hosted by talented gospel musician and producer, Nathan ‘Flo Rocka’ Akiremi, who dazzled the audience with his infectious energy and scene-stealing performance.
Veteran actress, Joke Silva; seasoned broadcasters, Tokunbo Ojekunle and Kenny ‘Keke’ Ogungbe; singers, Aity Dennis and Mallam Razphil were either invited to present awards or introduce segments to the excited winners in the keenly contested categories.
Young artistes, Eto Keno, Engo, Tem Pee, Gift Dennis, Isaac Davids, Jeshurun, Fisayo Check, Tolexzy, and kid sensation, Feranmi Angel punctuated the award show with enthralling performances that gave a peek into what the future of the Nigerian gospel music would offer. Multi-award winner, Flo Rocka, ended the show with a stirring, revamped version of his monumental hit, Twale.
Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, Dr. Tunde Bakare, imparted the spiritual dimension and biblical importance of gospel music, to the rapt attention of online guests; he rounded up the evening by presenting the last two awards, Album and Artiste of the year categories, to a tearful Angie (with an album entitled ‘Chosen’). Angie also won in the Song of the Year and Inspirational Song of the Year categories (both with Adura).
Another big winner of the night is Warri, Delta based Eto Keno who carted the highest number of awards this year – five. Eto’s haul of awards include: Best New Artiste, Worship (Ujiro), Praise (Ezi Me), Traditional (Arure) songs of the year, and Best Medley (You Are God). He was only able to express his joy once or twice as a result of poor connectivity issues and network service. However, the show sailed on without any discernible disruption in the flow of events.
Other artistes who excelled at this year’s awards are: Fisayo ‘Check Odebode (Vocalist), Allen MD Jnr.(Contemporary Song), Uche Micheal (Best Raise Single), Tem Pee (Best Urban Single), Gracia Akubuike (Best Worship Single) and Luisa Abios (Best Single Traditional).
The full list of awards indicates that 15 award categories were presented, involving eight individuals (four males and four females respectively) in a process that began on August 10 with hundreds of submissions, loads of anticipation, and hearty appreciation for the return of MEGAwards.
