The Lagos State Government has firmly denied rumors circulating on social media about a potential ban on sachet water in the state.
This follows the emergence of a viral video showing individuals bursting sachet water packs at factories and on buses.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the government clarified that those seen in the video were not officials or enforcement agents from any Lagos State Government agency. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources said, “My attention has been drawn to a viral video showing some individuals bursting sachet water packs at factories and on buses. I wish to categorically state that these individuals are not enforcement officers from any Lagos State Government agency or the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.”
The government emphasized that sachet water remains a crucial source of drinking water for millions of Lagos residents, particularly in underserved areas. Any regulation or policy change concerning its production and distribution would be preceded by extensive stakeholder engagement and public communication.
The ministry also reassured the public of its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability while balancing the needs of residents and businesses. “We are committed to addressing waste management and pollution challenges in a manner that does not unduly impact the livelihoods of Lagosians,” the statement added.
Residents are advised to disregard unverified claims and to report any unauthorized activities to the appropriate authorities. The government reiterated its dedication to tackling environmental issues through lawful and inclusive measures.
The viral video has sparked debates online about the role of sachet water in waste pollution, with some calling for stricter regulations and others defending its accessibility. As Lagos continues to battle plastic waste, the government has promised to prioritize sustainable solutions that cater to the city’s unique challenges.
