Ego

Talented sonorous singer and Glo ambassador, Ego Ogbaro, no doubt, has found her own footing and doing well in the music industry. A singer and former member of the Lagbaja’s Africano music band for over 10 years, Ego Ogbaro in this interview with the Editor, FOLORUNSHO HAMSAT, speaks on her music career, marriage, and more.

You have good voice and nice dance steps. Did you take special training in singing and dancing?

I have always loved dancing. I love dancing and I love singing. But I didn’t consciously sit down to say ok I want to learn dance.

Who among female singers is your role model?

Oh, well, I can’t point to a particular person. That’s the fact. But I think I admire the talent of different vocalists or female singers. But my earliest musical influences whose songs I listened to while growing up are Don Williams, Dolly Parton, Jackson Five, Peter Tosh, Christy Essien, KSA, Onyeka Onwenu and Fela. When I became older, I liked people like Indiana Arie, Erykah Badu, among others. I basically enjoy good music and picked things that I admired from all of these people.

Has marriage denied you anything?

I won’t say that marriage has taken away anything from me. If anything, it has added a lot of things. In fact, it has made me more mature.

How has it fare being married to a fellow showbiz person?

Well, as a celebrity, being married to a fellow showbiz person, I would say, sometimes it’s easy and sometimes it’s difficult. But the easy part is to understand whom you are married to. You are out for so long, you come home and you are tired. He knows why you are tired; he knows that you’ve been working. It makes you to be more understanding. I think that’s an advantage, though it’s not easy.

Being a celebrity, how does it affect your home?

Being married as a celebrity, I think, should not affect your home. This celebrity thing, I feel it should start and end with you while outside doing your stuffs. You don’t come home and start forming celebrity, no.

How have you been coping with your music and home?

So far so good, I have been able to manage both smoothly. Glory be to God.

What’s your weekly schedule like?

I don’t have a particular schedule that I follow. It depends on what I’m doing at that particular time. My weekend most of the time, I’m at event having a show or I’m rehearsing with my band.

What’s the biggest challenge that you’ve faced in your career?

Life is an ongoing challenge (laughs). Yes, in the past, there were challenges that took me by surprise but I’m very good at adapting. I started at a very young age, and staying out late for shows and recordings in the studio in those days was quite a challenge. But now, what I can call a challenge, is thinking of new things to come from my music all the time. I think of new things to add to my brand that will make me stay relevant and be more acceptable.

What’s your brand of music?

I sing soulful jazzy vibe, though I am not restricted because I can blend into any kind of sound.
