Monday Ohabuiro Chijioke Benson might not ring a bell but his stage name, ‘OYO C’, is a regular feature in the Nigerian music industry, given that he is one of the trending music acts at the moment. Oyo C, the Abia State born dancehall act, has just dropped a new musical video titled ‘Onuru Ube, which has been rave reviews on the radio and television. The young music talent, in this brief with Vibes writer, RAHMAN IS’MAIL, shares his dream in music.

Excerpts…

What’s the latest from you?

Yeah! I just released single titled Onuru Ube where Oyo-C Baba features Sean Breeze, produced by Mr E and directed by Irok Virnlz.

What is the meaning of Onuru Ube in your language?

Onuru Ube is an extraction from Ibo language and it’s a means of expressing dissatisfaction to your brother or uncle who has money but unwilling to extend helping hand to you his sibling but prefer to respond to girlfriends need and all.

Does the song have anything to do with  your life story?

In fact, it’s my life story. It’s something that happened to me as a person. I used the title purposely to communicate and share my experience with people who may be experiencing same especially from their family members who have the means but won’t assist.

Don’t you think this could have a backlash?

I don’t think so. The song is just a piece of advice to anyone in a position to help but declines. I am cool with my family. We are one. Besides, the message in the song travels far beyond my personal experience. The message simply preaches kindness.

Is Onuru Ube your first single?

No. I have done many other singles. I did the Igbo version of ‘Duro’, ‘Come Be My Sugar’, ‘One Raa’ and host of others.

Do you also sing in Igbo?

I use pidgin English to sing with a touch of Ibo flavour.

How long have you been singing?

I started singing professionally in 2009.

How will you describe your experience so far?

Wow! It’s been so challenging and interesting as well.

Had there been any point when you felt like quitting?

At a point in the beginning, I felt like quitting and venturing into stuff but soon after, the encouragement to keep on came from nowhere and I kept on.

What has been keeping you moving ahead?

I will say it is fate and my belief in God’s power of turning things around. I have started to feel the transformation with this new single.

You just have a new video…

Yes, the video is the talk of the town right now. The video is making me proud because I have never experienced the kind of reception I am getting from this video before. People love it and the traffic keeps skyrocketing on a daily basis. It’s been streaming on some cable TV stations and radio. And the quality of the video is superb.

Who is your role model?

I love and look up to all great artistes that are doing well in the industry because they dish out stuff that people want. That’s what makes them great musicians. But I am more passionate about Timaya and Flavour. When I listen to their songs or watch Timaya’s videos, I see the part of me in him. I love his charisma and performance skills. I wish to duet with him anytime soon.

How did your stage name, Oyo-C, come about?

Oyo-C was coined from the initials of my grandfather’s name, father’s name and my real name.

Are you signed to any record label yet?

Yes. I am currently signed under Face Reality Records. It’s an international music label based in Europe.

What do you have to say to your fans?

Thanks to you guys. I love you and I promise never to let you down. Keep subscribing to my videos and listen to my vibes.
