The Chairman of the House of Reps Committee on Women in Parliament, Taiwo Oluga, has revealed that her committee is considering an anti-rape bill that will prescribe the death penalty for rapists.

She also asked the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to create a special Anti-Rape Unit to clampdown on rapists.

Taiwo made this known on Tuesday, November 19, while briefing journalists on “Women Week” Conference coming up on November 24th.

“We (the Committee) are even proposing a penalty for rap and

Hon. Taiwo Oluga

by the time we finish with the motion and the Bill, it will be difficult for any man to go into rape; because it is very sad the way it is going. In fact, I would like that death should be the penalty of any man that tries to rape,” she said.

She also disclosed the reason for the House of Reps collaboration with NSCDC on rape.

“The rate at which our girls are being molested and ridiculed is saddening. Since I came on board, I have made some steps, which I will like you to know.

“For example, I have been able to speak to the Commandant of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps; that I want him to work with our office; Women In Parliament.

“We would like them to create a unit for us and it will be called the Anti-Rape Unit,” she noted.
