Group Calls ‘Underhand Tactics’ Allegations Against Kwara PDP Reps Candidate Hassan Oyeleke ‘Smear Campaign’
A group, the Kwara Awareness Movement, KAM, has condemned the smear campaign against the Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun PDP House of Representatives candidate, Hon Hassan Oyeleke by people ,who, KAM noted, have continued to bellyache because he proved himself as an upright citizen as Chairman of the adhoc committee tasked with investigating ‘Allegations Of Misappropriation Relating To Government Assets Under Harmony Holdings Limited’ while serving as a member of the Kwara state House of Assembly.
KAM in a joint statement issued in Ilorin by its Chairman, Comrade Kamal Adigun and Secretary, Mr Joseph Afolayan which was made available to Global Excellence penultimate Thursday said the people sponsoring the smear campaign have taken the wrong way.
The group noted that its press statement was in reaction to the story published by an online media outlet at the instance of the sponsors of the smear campaign which according to KAM featured annoying insinuations.
KAM asserted that Oyeleke as Chairman of Offa local government and a member of the Kwara state House of Assembly, had proved himself as a conscientious and honorable person, who had also promoted truthfulness and fairness.
‘Attempting to taint Honourable Hassan Oyeleke’s image is an unpatriotic act because he does not deserve such a thing. He has proved himself as a honourable man and he is known for being honest and truthful in all that he does.
His credibility and integrity are sound and noted by the House and the public. As a notable opposition leader in state for about three decades , he was not found wanting in any way.
He was a thorn in the flesh of the state government. It was like a tradition to serve as a chairman of a committee on any sensitive public matters; Public account, petroleum proliferations, illegal mining, illegal felling of trees, student -government matters, worker-government issues, public complaints, Honourable members and the public complaints.
We have done independent investigation and discovered that insinuations of underhand tactics are untrue.
It is even laughable and ridiculous that the sponsor of the smear campaign somewhat insinuated that the former state lawmaker demanded that a former official of the Harmony Holdings should offer a bribe to members of the committee by using the word ‘settle’.
To set the record straight, Hon Hassan Oyeleke made the misrepresented comments during a public hearing with members of the public including journalists at the gallery. No sane person would demand a bribe under such an atmosphere.
What happened was that an official of the company had sought to pressurize Hassan into easing things for him and during the public hearing the then state lawmaker had asked the cameramen to stop filming them and he threw a question at the man in question and asked ‘Why are you focusing on me and sending people to me? Why don’t you talk to others? the group said.
KAM also added that the former state lawmaker did not in any way take the issue personally or do anything to score points but only handled the assignment given him diligently.
The group added that it was a staff of the assembly, who wrote the report based on what members of the committee saw during their visit to Kaduna, Abuja and some locations in Ilorin, noting that the then governor Abdulfatah Ahmed had to later dissolve the board of Harmony Holdings sequel to the submission of report by the committee.
‘We were told that Oyeleke had before then served on the committee that looked into indiscriminate construction of filling stations in residential areas in Ilorin, the state capital.
No one complained that he did anything negative , he also ensured he did the right thing in respect of Harmony Holdings , allegations that were untrue were made known and declared unfounded and people who were found wanting in one way or the other were also told so , the then governor adopted the report and dissolved the board of Harmony Holdings and what the EFCC later did when a new government took over has vindicated the committee. So, what was it that Oyeleke did wrong, nothing’ the group submitted.
It will be recalled that on 17 August 2017, following the motion raised by Hon Abdulrafiu Abdulrahman of Ilorin North West , titled ‘Allegations Of Misappropriation Relating To Government Assets Under Harmony Holdings Limited’ during a plenary session, a 7-man Adhoc Committee headed by Hon Hassan Oyeleke was set up to look into the allegations.
The committee later submitted its report on March 8 2018.
