Although, the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said earlier this year that the party had not endorsed any candidate for the governorship election in Ekiti State, reliable sources have told Global Excellence magazine that, indeed the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was the preferred candidate of APC.

Oyegun had said that as ‘father to all’, APC would give all the contestants from its fold a level-playing ground, and that whoever emerges winner in an open contest would be the party’s candidate, but Global Excellence magazine’s sources said that Aso Rock had its choice in Fayemi, a former governor of the state, who last week Friday in Ado Ekiti declared again to run for the state’s number one office.

Global Excellence magazine recall that Fayemi and another former governor of the state, Mr. Niyi Adebayo, visited President Muhammadu Buhari late 2017. At a private meeting the trio reportedly held, sources said that the need for the endorsement of Mr. Fayemi by the president was on the agenda.

According to the source, Mr. Niyi Adebayo who poses now as Fayemi’s godfather, allegedly pleaded with President Buhari at the meeting to support the minister’s candidature because “he is the most acceptable man to Ekiti State indigenes at the moment and the fact that he is a minister is a guarantee that Ekiti State would witness rapid developments under his watch”.

Earlier in March, the Ekiti State chapter of the People’s Democratic Democratic Party (PDP), came up with the theory that the All Progressives Congress (APC) planned to win the July 14, 2018 governorship election at all cost with the deployment of N15 billion. Before the PDP declaration, however, Mr Kayode Fayemi had been quoted in the media that he had in the vault N8 billion to ‘fight’ the election from his own pocket and allegedly boasted of a supporting N20 billion from the presidency.

The APC at the national level denied the story, though.
