Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi  did keynote duties  at the Lecture/Awards event organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel, Kwara State NUJ  penultimate week. He   spoke on the topic  ‘New journalism: Traditional Ethics Versus Modern Professionalism’ .

Also speaking at the event, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rafiu Ajakaye noted that the new media  has only helped to make it easy to know and identify  the real journalists as elements of good journalism requires  hearing from  the two sides before making anything available  to  the public domain.

Giving his acceptance speech, an award recipient , Alhaji Yakubu Gobir who is a Kwara State APC stalwart noted that  the  advent of social media does not only pose  threats to the practice of journalism but also other professions.    It should, however, according to him be used as important tools by journalists for better journalism.

Gobir also advised Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s   Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rafiu Ajakaye to hold regular press briefing and ensure information from the government gets to the public first before people are fed with wrong notions and misconceptions.

PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Prince Mackson Oladiran Odeyemi who also received an award thanked the organizers for honouring him and noted that the award  will spur him  on to greater efforts to contribute to nation-building project.

In his welcome speech, Chairman, Correspondents’ Chapel, Alhaji Abdulhakeem Garuba who gave reasons for coming up with the idea of honouring distinguished Nigerians and  some members of the chapel    also canvassed for the return of history to the classroom’s secondary schools in particular.

He emphasized that history is key to a viable today and fundamental to a prosperous tomorrow.

Members of the Correspondents’ Chapel; Elder Stephen Oni,  Mr. Oluseyi Da Silva,  Mr. Yinka Owolewa and Mr. Femi  Akobi  won the  first edition of the essay competition held by the chapel and they received  awards at the event.
