David Ejoor, First Urhobo Army General, Dies at 87

A former governor of the Mid-Western State and one time Chief of Army Staff, Major General David Ejoor is dead.

Ejoor, also a former administrator of the now defunct Mid-Western Region, reportedly died in Lagos on Sunday afternoon.

Sources told our correspondent that the deceased was waiting to be flown abroad for medical treatment.

He was reported to have been sick for about three weeks.

The deceased hailed from Ovwor in Olomu Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Ejoor is the first Urhobo to attain the position of a Major General in the Nigerian military.

The deceased, who doubled as the first indigenous Nigerian Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, is the most senior chief of the Olomu Council of Chiefs in Olomu Kingdom.

Born on 10 January 1932, Olorogun Ejoor served as Chief of Army Staff from January 1971 to July 1975.

Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has condoled with Urhobo Nation and the Nigerian Army over the demise of the former COAS saying that his death was a great loss to the country particularly to his home state of Delta.
