CRAZY AUNTY MEG!

I shook my head. “It still doesn’t make sense to me,” I told her. “So, what does he now want from me?”
“Friendship of course,” she replied without hesitation.

“What kind of friendship? Does he not know I am another man’s woman? Didn’t you tell him?” I shot at her.
“Of course, I told him,” she retorted. “But it really doesn’t matter, Anita, you just play along with him, you know now.”

“You mean like sleeping with him? Do you really expect me to do that?” I’d thrown at her. “Aunty Meg, please don’t let me be rude to you!?”
She was shocked. I had never spoken to her that way before. She looked at me and I could see the hurt in her eyes. I felt bad for having spoken to her that way.

“Ah, Anita, you mean you could actually speak rudely to me just because I was trying to pass someone’s message to you?” Aunty Meg retorted.

“But, Aunty, I have made it clear to you that I do not want to have anything to do with this man but you kept trying to force him on me!”
“Me, force him on you? How?” she shot back.

“You keep trying to make me like him but I don’t and I have told you so!”
There was silence. We kept on driving with neither of us saying a word. After a while, I broke the silence.

“I’m sorry, Aunty, I shouldn’t have spoken that way to you, I guess I just lost my cool for a moment.” I apologized to her. She did not say anything. She didn’t even look in my direction.

“Aunty, I said I’m sorry now, you’re not saying anything,” I begged her.
“It’s okay but I must tell you I am not happy with you,” she lamented. “All I was doing was trying to get you to be friends with him, that’s all. You didn’t have to insult me on that.”
“I said I am sorry, Aunty, please, let’s forget all about it,” I said to her, feeling a bit bad I acted the way I did. “Let’s not talk about Dr, Bambi again.”

She nodded and then looked at me with a mischievous look in her eyes. “But we can talk about his son, the junior doctor?”

I turned to look at her. She had a coy smile on her face. “I don’t get you, Aunty, what about him?” I asked her, keeping a straight face.
“What about him?” she’d thrown at me. “You think I didn’t notice the way you were looking at him? And the smile on your face?|”

I tried to say something but stopped. I wasn’t quite sure I knew what I wanted to say.
She continued. “When I found that you were taking too long in the theatre, I came in to check on you and was told by one of the nurses that the doctor was already done with you but you guys were having a gist inside, so tell me, what’s going on between both of you?”
To be honest, I didn’t know when I let out a smile.

I found the very thought of Doctor Bambi’s son quite amusing. To think that I was already starting to like him was unbelievable. But the minute I realized Aunty Meg was right beside me, I snapped out of my fantasy and wiped the smile off my face.

“So, Aunty, what makes you think we were talking about something important or special?” I asked her, trying to sound serious by keeping a straight face.

She smiled. I know that smile. It’s the kind of mischievous smile Aunty flashes at me whenever she suspects I have been acting naughty.

“You know I know you very well, Anita, tell me, what is happening? Is there some fireworks going on between you guys?” she asked, giving me a wink.

“Aunty Meg, I don’t know what it is you want to hear but let me just say this, the guy is a nice person. Yes, I like hi, but that’s where it all ends. Period.”

“So, you mean you don’t like him enough to date him, at least he’s not an old man like his father, right?” she prodded on. I gave a heavy sigh.

“Auntyyyyyy!!” I called jokingly. “I like him, yes but can I date him? Of course, not. I am somebody else’s wife, have you forgotten?”

“Come on, Anita, you’re a young girl and I know you would wish sometimes that you were with a younger guy,” she’d continued. “Even if you don’t want to admit it, I can see it in your eyes and body language.”

I was quiet. This woman had never spoken so intimately with me like this before. What exactly is she getting at? I’d wondered.

“Look, I know it’s not my business but I think you need a young man to set your youthful body on fire. MD is a nice man but he has a wife who comes first in his life before you even though she has given him no child. He is no longer a young man himself, servicing two women properly might not be something his old body can carry.”

“So, exactly what are you getting at, Aunty, I still don’t get you?” I said to her.
“All I am saying is, are you truly enjoying your relationship with MD? Are you truly happy?” she continued. And before I could say word, she added: “what you need is a young man, a young man like Doctor Bambi’s son, who will make you feel young again!”
