BACK TO BUSINESS!

Now, I’d finally lost it. I got up and sprang promptly to my feet. “Doctor, do I look like a fool to you?”I’d sneered at him. “Do I look like a teenager who probably has no idea what she’s asking to do? You didn’t compel me to do what I’m asking for. You have not forced me to come and evacuate my own unborn child, I came here on my own volition, so why would my husband choose to come and make trouble because you gave me D&C that I paid for?” He was silent, trying to process what I just told him.

“So, doctor, are you going to give me what I came here for or I should take my leave right away?”

He was still staring at me, not saying a word. I couldn’t take it anymore. I picked up my bag and headed to the door.

“Wait!” he called out. I turned back and faced him. “Let me go and prepare the theatre for you!”

I was not sure I’d heard him well. I stared at him for a fleeting moment before saying, “Excuse me? What did you say?”

“I said hold on a minute for me and let me go prepare the theatre for you!” he’d said hurriedly, apparently displeased I had to make him repeat himself.

I heaved a sigh of relief and said, ‘okay.’

He went outside the room while I waited for him inside. Now, I started to get nervous. And I began to pray silently for everything to go well. Few minutes later, the doctor emerged. I noticed he was now wearing an over all, a clear indication that he was prepared for me in the theatre. But still, I couldn’t help noticing the way his eyes were roving endlessly all over my body. Looking into his eyes, I could see it had lust written all over it. The man was starting to make me feel really uncomfortable around him but there was nothing I could do. I had to endure him till I was done with what I came here for and go my way.

“You know,” he’d said to me, a funny looking smile on his face, “you’re a really beautiful lady, I would like to get to know you better. I know you and I didn’t exactly start off on a good footing, but the thing is, I like you and would like us to be friends.”

I knew it. The guy was mad. A mental case. He had been staring lustfully at me all this while and now he couldn’t bear to keep his madness to himself. But, still, I would still have to manage him till after the D&C is done, then I would have absolutely no need for him anymore.

“Doctor, I honestly appreciate your liking me, but I would also appreciate if we can just stick to the business at hand, please…” I pleaded.

He smiled. “It’s okay, I understand,” he returned, looking directly in my eyes and making me uneasy. “I guess I shouldn’t have been so forward, I mean, we only just met, right?”

I slowly shook my head. “And besides, I’m married and you know that, so why would you be asking me out knowing I’m married?”

“Don’t get it wrong, Anita, I have not asked you out..”

“Is that so?” I’d thrown back, surprised to hear him say what he said.

“So, what do you call what you were trying to do just now?”

“I was only asking to be your friend, Anita..”

“Okay,” I shrugged.

“So, am I your friend?”

“You’re not my enemy, doctor,” I answered, this time, looking into his eyes too. “But, like I said, can we get on with the business at hand?”
