“Listen, Anita, I am telling you that nothing will happen to either you or my son, I can guarantee you that,” MD said after a long spell of silence.

“So, you think that it’s okay for me and my son to just appear in your house without any prior discussion with your wife?” I’d thrown at him.

“I have not said that I will not have in prior discussion with my wife before you guys move in, all I am saying here is that you shouldn’t make it look or sound like my wife decides what happens in my house,” he retorted.

“Remember, you’re my wife as well and you have a child for me. And besides, I thought you and my wife are already getting along” What makes you think she would reject you and my son if you choose to move into the house?”

I smiled broadly. This man does not understand the way of women.

“So, you think because me and Aunty Lizzy have met a couple of times and she’s been nice to me, you think if we move into the house. She will remain nice? I asked her. He looked puzzled.

“And why do you think she may not be as nice as she has been to you?” MD asked, looking and sounding genuinely at a loss.

“Of course, she can’t be as nice as she’s been before because by moving into the house, we would be encroaching  on her space and she may not find that the least amusing. And then, the part she will find most painful is the fact that having junior in the house will be a constant and painful reminder of the child she couldn’t give you!

MD’s face fell. It was as though the truth just hit him in the face. He didn’t realize the gravity of what he was asking me to do. He didn’t know that, as nice as his wife may seem, there is a limit to how far her patience can go. All hell, they say, hath no fury like a woman scorned.

“Hmm…I guess you have a point there, Anita, having junior around in the house can get her emotionally down sometimes,” MD was finally coming to his senses. He was starting to see the sense in the point I was making.

“Do you now see what I was trying to say?” I said to him.

“Yes, dear, I see your point,” he’d replied,” but still, there must be a way around it.”

“How do you mean?”

He looked straight into my eyes,” I am saying that for how long am I expected to keep you guys outside my home.”

When will it be the right time to bring you and my son fully into my life? When will other members of my family get to know you and recognize you as part of the family? Tell me, when?”

To be honest, at that point, I felt some sympathy for the man. He is a good man. A wonderful human being.  He is the sort of man any woman would be proud to call her husband. But this is not really about him. It’s about me, my son and his wife. That’s a different ball game entirely.

“Don’t be in a rush, my dear, I can assure you that everything will fall into place at the right time. But that right time is certainly not now,” I told him as a matter of fact.

MD was quiet. I could see he was weighing up everything inside him. He was not ready to give up easily. And then, like someone who had been emotionally burdened by something, MD sighed heavily and said to me.

“I’m going home, Anita, I’m going to talk to my wife right now!”

I couldn’t believe he was that serious about the issue. I had no idea he was ready to get up and go home straight to his wife to address the matter with her. If that was the case, then that means he could find a way to get his wife to agree for me to move into the house with my son and I’m not sure if that’s what I want right now.

“But, MD, do you have to leave so hurriedly, and go home to meet your wife on this issue?” I’d asked him, wondering what the hurry was.

“Yes, dear, I have to,” he’d replied hastily. He was obviously a man in a hurry to leave.” You have just awakened my sense to this matter, I must confess that I have not been paying enough attention to it. I just took it for granted that whenever I was ready I would just bring you and my son home. But now I can see that it won’t be that straight forward as I thought it would be. So, the earlier I begin to address the situation the better for all of us,”

I was confused. I had to find a way to slow this man down. I was carrying inside me a pregnancy that I wasn’t sure belonged to me, if my tummy starts to protrude, how will I go about the D&C under his roof and he will not know that something was wrong with me. Even his wife, being a woman, could notice I was pregnant just after a few days under the same roof with her.

“That’s true, MD, I think I understood what you’re saying,” I said softly to him. “But, still, I don’t see why you should be in a hurry, there’s plenty time for you to sort things out with her.”

“I don’t understand you, Anita, you were the same person who was telling me minutes ago why it is important for me to sort things out quickly.

“Yes, I know, but I also didn’t say you need to run off right away and leave me here when I’m still enjoying your company,” I said to him, pulling him closer to me.

He smiled,” you mean you still want of me, right?”

“Yes, MD, I’m saying I want you here with me and your son. There’s no need hurrying home to your wife just so that you quickly get her approval to bring us home. It’s something that has to be done carefully. You have to choose the right moment for it. Besides, your son and I are not running anywhere, are we?

He didn’t have a choice. He had to stay back and relax with me some more. But how much time can I buy before something goes wrong? I need to act fast and I’ve got to do so quickly!
