Leader of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South-West Caucus at the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. (Comrade) Joseph Iranola Akinlaja with his hundreds of thousands of supporters have dumped PDP for Zenith Labour Party.
The Federal parliamentarian made the official declaration on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Chelsea Hotel in Abuja alongside with the former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko who was unavoidably absent at the venue.
Former National Chairman of Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu MNI, OFR was however announced as the party’s acting National Chairman, whilst Dr Kayode Ajulo, former Labour Party scribe also registered his presence at the high profile gathering.
Akinlaja who is currently seeking reelection for another term in the House of Representatives for the Ondo East and West Federal Constituency seat will now be contesting on the platform of Zenith Labour Party.
Similarly, Dr Mimiko who had earlier declared his presidential ambition whilst he was in Labour Party would equally be making Zenith Labour Party as a veritable platform to pursue his dream.
Mimiko and Akinlaja are of the belief that the effect of the current economic reality, unprecedented level of division, distrust at individual and communal levels, were of great concern to them.
Both leaders further added that the ability to envision great ideas and demonstrable track record, rather than place and circumstances of birth should be the most compelling basis for investing candidates with power.
Akinlaja is a ranking member of Federal House of Representatives, representing Ondo East/West Federal Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Petroleum Resources Downstream, a position he’s been holding since inception of the 8th Assembly.
Before he delved into active politics he was a Labour leader of note. He rose to the position of Deputy National President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and General Secretary of Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG.
Consequently, the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD a branch of NUPENG) made him their Grand Patron/Technical Consultant. At some point, Akinlaja held sway as Deputy National Chairman of Labour Party, under Chief Nwanyanwu.
