The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said that serving Senator Buruji Kashamu is wanted in the United States of America (USA) because of the 6.6kg of heroin he allegedly imported into the country in 1994.

In a fresh 54-paragraph counter affidavit filed before a Federal High Court in Abuja opposing Kashamu’s claim that he had no hands in drug dealings, the NDLEA averred that the lawmaker was indicted for narcotics offence but escaped while his alleged co-offenders were arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to various terms of imprisonment in America.

Kashamu had in a fresh suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/536/2018 and dated October 16, 2018, refuted allegations of drug-dealing against him and sought the court’s enforcement of his fundamental rights.

But NDLEA’s affidavit deposed to by one Shehu Zakks Mohammed, a litigation officer, explained that Kashamu escaped following an indictment in the United States’ District of Illinois, Eastern Division causing the American government to dispatch a request for his extradition through diplomatic channels in 2015.

Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed on Friday fixed November 20 for hearing in the fresh suit.
