The sex-for-mark scandal that rocked the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife through the recorded audio conversation of a professor in the citadel of learning demanding for a trip to the ‘sanctuary’  before allowing a female postgraduate student to pass his course which has rocked  the nation’s education and social landscapes for months has eventually ended. Miss Monica Osagie had released a recorded telephone conversation that went viral where the sacked lecturer demanded five rounds of sex to enhance her marks.

In the eye of the storm was Prof. Richard Akindele  who battled  to save his head and secure a clean bill of health. Dr Abiola Akinyode-Afolabi who is the defence counsel to the alleged victim in the sex-for-marks saga,  Monica Osagie  had asserted before an  investigative panel that Prof. Richard Akindele deliberately  failed  Monica for  refusing  his sexual demand. Osagie also told the panel that she did not score 33 per cent as alleged by the professor but that she was failed in order to make her bow to his sexual demand. The university later set up an Investigative Committee to look into the allegations of the sexual harassment  that had the audio recording as evidence.

Miss Monica Osetobe Osagie is a Masters degree student of the Business Administration department. The committee apparently found the randy professor culpable as the institution’s Governing Council  announced his sack on Wednesday  having according to the  Vice-Chancellor,  Prof.  Eyitope Ogunbodede found him guilty of all the charges leveled against him. The Vice-Chancellor,  announced the decision of the Governing Council at a press conference in Ile-Ife. ‘The Council, at its meeting of today, Wednesday, 20th of June, 2018, having considered the recommendation of  the Senate, as well as the report of the Joint Committee of Council and the Senate, decided that Professor Richard Akindele should be dismissed from the services of the university for gross misconduct,  Professor Akindele’s actions in requesting for sexual favours from Miss Osagie to change her examination scores was a scandalous behaviour that has brought ridicule to the name of the university. It has tarnished the reputation of the university, as it portrays OAU as an institution where the teachers and the examiners trade marks for sexual favours.
