The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on the incessant killings by suspected herdsmen.

Speaking on the sidelines of A public hearing on the national minimum wage in Lokoja on Friday, the President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, said that the call became necessary in view of the obvious failure on the part of the Federal Government to find a lasting solutions to the spate of killings in parts of the country.

“We are very concerned when we hear and read in the news the rate at which innocent people are being killed on a daily basis and the obvious helplessness of the Federal Government to address the issue. We are calling on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency so as to give it a top priority attention it urgently deserved,” he said.

Also, the Oyo State Police Command said its men were prepared to ensure that the Sunday protests were not hijacked by hoodlums. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said that churches and other places of worship would be given security attention.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the state police command was always on routine patrol every day and that Sunday would not be an exception.

The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, also said the command would ensure that the protest was orderly and safe, while the Edo State Police Command said that though it had not been officially informed about the planned protest, it did not expect any breakdown of law and order.

The Commissioner of Police, who spoke to one of our correspondents, said, “I am yet to hear anything from CAN; I want to believe that no organisation will take the laws into its hands. I know CAN as a very peaceful organisation. So, there is no cause for worries.”

Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, said he had yet to be briefed on the planned protests.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Police Command, DSP Kamal Abubakar, said the command had not got any official notice from CAN . Also, Taraba and Rivers State police commands said they were not aware of the planned protest but promised to do the needful should CAN officially contact them about the planned protests.
