Based on the effect of incessant attacks by the dreaded Boko Haram Islamist on hapless citizens, it has been established that more than 50,000 births have been recorded so far among internally displaced persons in Nigeria. And the record may hit 60,000 by the end of 2015, said the statement.

Reports coming from the North-East, especially in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, are surely not cheering. Women, who have fled their towns and villages due to these attacks, now give birth in droves in camps reserved for internally displaced persons in the zone, despite the sorry state of the camps and their pitiable conditions.

What is baffling to many, however, is whether the women got pregnant before fleeing their villages, or whether they came about their pregnancies while sojourning in the camps.

Besides, who are those responsible for the pregnancies?

As at last month, October, no fewer than 65 women were said to have given birth in past weeks, despite the terrible health condition in the camps.

‘’There has been cholera outbreak in some of the camps, yet women keep giving birth at various camps with the highest number coming from Adamawa.

It was also gathered that no fewer than 28 women among the over 7,000 internally displaced persons from various communities in Borno State, following attacks by insurgents, have been delivered of their babies at the camps.

As it is now, life remains precarious for victims of Boko Haram, especially women, who seem to be oblivious of the security situations that turned them to refugees, as well as the pitiable living conditions where they are camped, and yet get pregnant in droves, only to give birth to babies away from home.
