Having a vision is not enough to bring a dream to life, it has to be backed up with the right attitude, and this is the combo pack of passion and action. When these three are thrown into the mix, the end result as it is the case with Biola Adelowo is resounding success. This theory has truly worked for the bold, beautiful and sassy Biola who recently launched her top-of-the-range make-up school, studio and boutique, Behollaz Place in Lagos. Biola graduated from House of Tara a few years back before setting up her own beauty academy.  In this interview with ALONGE MICHAEL, Biola opens up on her business, aspirations, among other issues of interest. Excerpt…

Let’s get to know you.

My name is Abiola Adelowo, a make-up artist; a lively person and an undergraduate of National Open University, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

How did the journey start?

My journey into the esoteric world of make-up started way back, the year I can’t remember precisely. On my quest to know more about the rudiments of make-up artistry, I met a lady with a makeup kit bag and I approached her about how to make a career out of it. After a few days of our relationship, I ended up being trained under her for just two weeks. After this, I went to House of Tara for my professional training and I must confess it was such a sweet experience.

As a trainee of House Of Tara; how did it shape you as a make-up artist?

It has really been supportive and it has shown today. After the classes, they kept asking what we intended to do next. Always pushing you to make something tangible/worthwhile out of the time and investment spent, to culminate into an honourable business and to make you a partaker of the honour. So, when I told them about this place, they were happy and still remain happy for me.

Where do you intend to be in the next five years?

Since my keen interest is to have a make-up academy and studio, I have been watching Tara’s videos on Instagram on how to be a successful entrepreneur in one’s chosen career, this has built more interest of expanding my horizon in the business. And for your question, the next five years, Behollaz Place would have had many branches, it would become a big name to reckon with in the industry. As I am starting now, you can see I have started on a solid ground.

What novelties do you want to inject to make you stand out from others?

Attention. Attention is that unique selling point I am going to use as a wand to surpass others. How? I was taught that children do not learn at the same speed and you and I know that the way Maths is being taught in school is not the same thing as English Language; it depends on who and how. So, I am going to give each and every student or client of mine the necessary attention that will leave an impression in their minds.

What legacy do you want to leave behind for the next generation?

Independence, hard-work and self-commitment.

Your make-up studio is posh; this might have cost you a fortune…

..Well, this is just a stepping stone, where we are going is bigger than where we are now, God is our strength and may God continue to bless those whose commitments, support and efforts, day and night are for the growth of this business, I cannot thank them enough. But I must tell you, we have spent some millions to put this together.

What motivates you to do things?

When I see an achiever, when I see how out of the blues, someone became a global icon, I’m motivated by this. If I go out and I see a lot of beautiful novelties people are doing, I get encouraged and wish to do even more. I want to serve, provide things that humanity will benefit from, not humanitarianly though, we’ll still get to that soon when we start our Corporate Social Responsibility. (Laughs out loud) There is this mentor that I have that he just keeps pushing me to do things, encouraging me to keep my head up.

How do you ward off love advances from men?

By being very strict, but polite. I have always been getting advances from men but I try as much as possible to ward them off politely.

Do you have any man in your life at the moment?

(Laughs) You know, the thing is, anytime people ask me about this, what I tell them is that, when I have settled down with my business, then we can think of someone. Everyman wants an asset and not a liability, if you see me with something as big as what I have set up, you would understand the kind of man I am talking about. It’s not just for any time waster or lazy brat to come and just sweep me off my feet like that. Everybody has a standard. This alone is a standard to me and I am just starting.

What’s your message to those who look up to having this kind of school?

What I will say is that, Rome was not built in a day, the fact that I started this big doesn’t mean anyone who doesn’t have the ability to start like this is a failure. You can always start with what you have. The most important things are prayers, hard work and your creative ability, that’s what you ultimately present to God, and He blesses accordingly. Tara once said she started with a small box in her father’s sitting room; today, she is a global brand. You can start anywhere; what matters is the end-result. Even God loves humble beginning.
